Designer is none of those. It is free, permanently, to anyone with a SolarEdge account, and the commercial logic is easy to read from the product itself: SolarEdge earns on hardware, and Designer only lays out systems whose bill of materials is SolarEdge inverters and SolarEdge power optimisers. Once you accept that trade, the tool is better than its price suggests. The catch is that it will not design around anybody else’s hardware.
Direct answer. SolarEdge Designer is free, browser based, and genuinely good inside an all-SolarEdge system. DNV GL validated its energy simulation to within 1 percent of PVsyst with a minus 0.2 percent annual bias. It scores 35 of 50 on our bench. Buy nothing, use it, but pair it with a neutral tool, because as of August 2026 it lays out SolarEdge hardware only and produces no single line diagram.

What SolarEdge Designer Is
SolarEdge Designer is a free web based design and proposal platform published by SolarEdge Technologies, the Israeli power electronics manufacturer that commercialised the DC power optimiser architecture. It sits inside the wider SolarEdge software suite alongside the monitoring platform installers already use for commissioned sites, and it requires nothing more than a SolarEdge installer account to open.
The workflow will be familiar to anyone who has used a cloud design tool. You enter an address, the platform pulls high definition satellite imagery, and AI assisted roof detection proposes the roof planes and builds a rough 3D model. You correct the model, add obstructions such as chimneys, vents and trees with real dimensions, and the tool generates an irradiance map across the roof surface. Module placement can be automatic, driven by that irradiance map, or manual where you want control. Stringing is then handled for you, with design validation running continuously against SolarEdge’s own inverter and optimiser compatibility rules.
Two things separate it from the generic free tool category. The first is that the energy simulation is not a rule of thumb. SolarEdge commissioned DNV GL to compare Designer’s energy estimation against PVsyst at multiple intermediate stages, plane of array irradiance, DC conversion, inverter input and inverter output, not only at the final meter. The published DNV GL validation report puts Designer within 1 percent of PVsyst with an annual average bias of minus 0.2 percent. That is a real third party credential, and very few free tools have one.

Thirty five out of fifty is a good score, and it is worth being clear why. Designer loses most of its points on documentation output and hardware neutrality, and it recovers them on price and on simulation credibility. A tool that scores 35 while costing nothing is a different proposition from a tool that scores 35 at $3,000 per seat.
Verdict. If your company installs SolarEdge on most jobs, Designer is not a compromise, it is the right primary tool and it costs nothing. If your hardware choice changes job to job, Designer can only ever be a second window, because the moment the customer wants a different inverter the design has to be rebuilt somewhere else.

SolarEdge Designer is free. There is no paid tier, no per project credit, no seat limit and no watermark, and access comes with a SolarEdge installer account. That is the whole pricing section, and it is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly rather than hedging.
The honest way to read that price is as a hardware subsidy. SolarEdge earns on inverters and power optimisers, so the design tool sits inside the hardware business rather than beside it. This is not a criticism. It is the same economics that made module manufacturers publish free string sizing tools for thirty years, and it produces a real benefit for installers: because the tool is not itself a revenue line, there is no paid tier gating the simulation engine, which is how several subscription platforms are structured.

The cost of Designer is not zero, it is just not paid in cash. It is paid in hardware flexibility. If a SolarEdge optimiser plus inverter package sits above a comparable [string inverter](/glossary/string-inverter) on your BOM, that difference across a year of installs is your real licence fee.
The cost that does show up on your invoice is the second tool. Because Designer produces no single line diagram, an installer submitting permit applications needs a drafting or design platform alongside it. What SolarEdge Designer Does Best
The strongest thing about Designer is not the roof modelling or the proposal. It is that the simulation understands what the hardware actually does under shade, and on our bench no hardware-neutral tool models SolarEdge optimiser behaviour as faithfully.
In a conventional string design, shading on one module drags the whole string’s operating point down, because series connected modules share a current. Every design tool has to model that mismatch, and the good ones do it well. A SolarEdge system changes the physics: each module carries a power optimiser that decouples it electrically from its neighbours, so a shaded module loses its own output without pulling the string with it. Modelling that correctly means simulating at the module level, applying the optimiser’s own operating envelope, and then checking the aggregate string voltage stays inside the inverter’s window.
Designer does this natively because SolarEdge wrote both halves. The hardware-neutral platforms we have benched handle module-level power electronics through a derate or a simplified per module mode. That approximation is usually close enough, but on a genuinely awkward roof, a dormer, a chimney stack, a neighbour’s tree line, the difference between an approximation and a real optimiser model is the difference between a proposal you can defend and one you cannot. Automatic stringing that is actually trustworthy. Because the compatibility rules come from the manufacturer, the design validation catches voltage window violations, optimiser count limits and unbalanced strings before you commit. Optimiser barcode mapping in bulk. Commissioning a SolarEdge site means mapping every optimiser serial to its physical position. Designer carries that mapping from design through to the monitoring platform, which removes a tedious and error prone commissioning step.
The design to monitoring continuity. The same account that drew the system owns the monitored site afterwards, so the as built layout and the performance data live together. Most stacks lose that link at handover.

Where SolarEdge Designer Falls Short
The limitations are not defects. They are the boundary of what a manufacturer’s tool is built to do, and they matter because they decide whether Designer can be your only tool.

One vendor's hardware, and only that. As of August 2026 the product documents no third party string inverter, no third party optimiser and no [microinverter](/glossary/microinverter) path. If the customer specifies different hardware, the design does not adapt, it moves to another tool.

No single line diagram. Designer stops short of the drawing a permit office wants. Every commercial submission needs an SLD produced elsewhere, which means a second licence or an outsourced drafting partner.

⚠️ Watch out
A free tool from your inverter supplier shapes your hardware decisions whether or not anyone intends it to. If Designer is the only place your team draws systems, the answer to every project becomes SolarEdge by default, including the projects where a string inverter would have been cheaper and just as good.

Nobody buys it, so the real question is who should make it their primary design tool. The answer is clearer here than on any other tool we have reviewed.
