3. OpenSolar

What it does best. A free core design and proposal product funded by hardware referral margin, with a large template library, broad integration coverage and a community that has already answered most questions. For a small German residential team, the cost of entry is zero and the time to a usable quote is short.

Pricing. The core platform is free and stays free. OpenSolar has said API Access, charged per project on creation, and Connectors, charged as a flat monthly fee, become chargeable from 16 April 2026, but it has not published the rates and they vary by geography. Pricing. Basic is US$135 per user per month billed annually, which is US$1,620 a year, or US$159 month to month. Premium is US$220 billed annually, which is US$2,640 a year, or US$259 monthly. Plan sets are a separately priced service rather than a plan inclusion, and site models start at US$9.99.

Who it suits. International groups extending into Germany with Aurora templates and training already in place.

Honest limitations. The German layer is thin. No EEG tariff table by commissioning window, no direct-marketing model, no zero-VAT logic, no Mieterstrom shape and no Leistungsverzeichnis structure, so your team rebuilds and then maintains all of it inside the template. 6. Otovo partner tooling

What it does best. Otovo is a marketplace rather than a software vendor: it acquires the homeowner, standardises the quote, and routes the job to a local installer. For a German installer whose constraint is lead flow rather than document quality, that is a real answer, and the standardised customer-facing quote removes the sales-document problem entirely.

Pricing. Commission on delivered jobs rather than a licence fee.

Who it suits. Installers with spare crew capacity who would rather buy demand than build a sales function.

Honest limitations. You are renting the customer relationship, not owning it. Pricing power sits with the marketplace, the quote is not yours to differentiate, and the margin per job is thinner than direct work. It also does not help at all on commercial rooftop, Mieterstrom or anything outside the standardised residential product.

7. Enpal-style vertically integrated platforms

What it does best. Enpal and comparable vertically integrated German players built internal software around a lease and subscription proposition, which lets them present a monthly figure with no capital outlay and close on a single conversation. The tooling is tightly coupled to the financing product, and that coupling is the point.

Pricing. Internal. These platforms are not licensable to third parties.

Who it suits. Nobody outside those organisations, which is exactly why they are worth understanding: they set the expectation your Angebot is compared against in the German residential market.

Honest limitations. As a buying option this row is empty. The practical lesson for an independent Fachbetrieb is that competing against a monthly-payment story with a capital-sum quote loses on framing before it loses on price, so your proposal tool needs a financing view including KfW-style instalments.

8. Solargraf

What it does best. Speed. Solargraf is built for residential sales teams that need a decent quote out the same day, with e-signature and a light learning curve. New salespeople become productive in days rather than weeks.

Pricing. Sold by project volume rather than by seat. Starter is US$2,799 a year for 240 projects and two users, rising to Enterprise at US$12,999 for 1,500 projects, with API access a further US$4,000 a year on every tier except Enterprise.

Who it suits. High-volume residential sales operations where turnaround beats depth.

9. PVsyst

What it does best. PVsyst is the simulation engine lenders and independent engineers ask for by name on larger German commercial and utility projects. The loss diagram is the artefact due diligence teams want to read.

Pricing. CHF 700 per user per year for the Professional annual subscription, so CHF 3,500 for five seats before the 5 to 20 per cent group discount. Education is CHF 420, Training and Research CHF 560, Student CHF 25 and PVsystCLI CHF 3,000. It is a subscription rather than a perpetual licence, and per seat it costs less than SurgePV.

Who it suits. Technical due diligence, planning offices and developers above the multi-megawatt line.

10. Sunbase

What it does best. Sunbase leads with CRM: pipeline, lead routing, follow-up and reporting, with proposal generation attached. If your bottleneck is sales process rather than design, that ordering is defensible.

Pricing. Sunbase states an entry price of US$59 per user per month and does not publish its tiers. Any wider range quoted elsewhere is an industry-observed estimate rather than a vendor-published figure.

Who it suits. Sales-led firms that already have a design tool and need pipeline discipline.

Honest limitations. As a proposal engine it is the weakest here on engineering depth and German compliance, and it assumes the design comes from somewhere else. The German market has stretched at both ends, and one proposal template cannot cover both.

Is VAT charged on residential solar in Germany?

Since 1 January 2023 the supply and installation of PV systems on or near residential buildings carries a zero VAT rate in Germany, covering modules, inverters, mounting and storage supplied as part of the same job. Commercial installations outside the relief remain standard-rated. Proposal software should apply the rate from the project type automatically. How should a German proposal present the EEG feed-in tariff?

Name the route, the size band and the commissioning assumption, then show the rate. Volleinspeisung and Überschusseinspeisung pay different rates for the same roof, rates step down on the published degression schedule, and above 100 kW the system moves to mandatory direct marketing where income is the market premium plus exchange revenue minus the marketer’s fee. A single blended cent-per-kWh figure hides the assumption that matters most to the customer’s return.

What does a Mieterstrom proposal need that a normal quote does not?

Two revenue streams rather than one, a tenant tariff constrained relative to the local basic supply price, a take-up assumption across the residential units, the Mieterstromzuschlag where the conditions are met, a metering and measuring concept the residents and the grid operator both accept, and a clear statement of the ongoing supplier obligations the building owner is taking on. A standard residential template with one savings number cannot express any of it.

Do I need to mention the Marktstammdatenregister in the proposal?

Yes, and name who does it. Every generating and storage unit must be registered in the Marktstammdatenregister, generally within one month of commissioning, and late registration puts feed-in payment at risk. It is administrative, which is exactly why it slips. Stating the responsibility and the deadline in the Angebot converts a likely post-installation argument into a line the customer already agreed to.

Why do German buyers ask more technical questions than UK or US buyers?

Because the market expects a technical document rather than a sales brochure. A typical German buyer wants the module and inverter type designation with datasheets, the assumed specific yield in kWh per kWp with the simulation method named, an itemised Leistungsverzeichnis, the grid application position under VDE-AR-N 4105, and warranty terms per component. Proposal software that cannot attach structured technical appendices leaves your team assembling those PDFs by hand on every job.
