Searching for the best solar software in Germany usually means one of two things. Either a licence renewal landed and the number was worse than expected, or you are assembling a toolset from scratch and do not yet know how many products you have to buy. German solar software is not one category. It is six overlapping ones, and only two of them get reviewed. Design and proposals dominate the comparison articles while monitoring, CRM and the Handwerk field operations layer, which is where a German installer actually loses margin on a 40-job month, get a footnote. Our ranking puts SurgePV first at roughly €1,180 (US$1,299) per user per year on the 5-User Team plan because it covers four of the six layers credibly in one licence. The honest answer is that you will run two or three tools, and the skill is choosing which and refusing the rest.
Direct answer. The best solar software in Germany for 2026 is SurgePV at about €1,180 per user per year on the 5-User Team plan (€5,900 for five seats), covering 3D design, 8,760-hour simulation, EEG and self-consumption financial modelling with the 0 per cent VAT rate applied correctly, and VDE-labelled plan sets in one licence. It does not do monitoring, CRM or crew dispatch, so most German installers pair it with a monitoring portal (usually the inverter brand’s own) and a Handwerkersoftware such as openHandwerk or an ERP such as weclapp.

The Six Layers of a German Solar Software Stack
Conflating these is the most common reason a German installer overspends on licences and still feels slow.
Design is array layout on a real roof or parcel: obstruction detection, Dachneigung and azimuth, module placement against Brandschutz setbacks, string configuration and equipment selection. Simulation is the yield question, an 8,760-hour hourly model producing P50, P75 and P90 output that a Sparkasse or a Landesbank credit committee will accept. Proposals is the customer-facing Angebot with the Einspeisevergütung, the self-consumption model, the 0 per cent VAT position and financing. CRM and ERP is the commercial spine: leads, quotes, orders, purchasing, invoicing and the DATEV export your Steuerberater expects. Field operations is the Handwerk layer: scheduling, Monteur dispatch, Arbeitszeiterfassung, digital Bautagebuch and the Inbetriebnahmeprotokoll. Monitoring is the twenty-year job: production data, alerting, performance ratio and the evidence that settles a warranty argument.
Germany loads specific constraints onto each layer. Design and connection answer to VDE-AR-N 4105 on low voltage and VDE-AR-N 4110 on medium voltage, with the technical rules published by VDE. Proposals have to encode the current Einspeisevergütung, the 0 per cent VAT rate on residential systems, and the Solarspitzengesetz rules that decide whether the plant can feed in at full capacity at all. Field operations has to produce a handover folder that a German customer will read line by line. Monitoring, more than in any other market, is decided by the inverter brand, because SMA, Fronius and SolarEdge between them cover a very large share of installed German capacity and each ships its own portal.

The Top 10 Solar Software Platforms in Germany
Pricing is 2026, annualised, in euros, with US list prices converted at roughly €0.91 per US dollar. Ask for a written euro quote before you sign, because several vendors negotiate at five seats and above.
1. SurgePV
What it does best. Collapsing four layers into one licence. Enter a German address, get an AI-built 3D roof from satellite imagery in under a minute, place modules with roof-edge and Brandschutz setbacks applied, run the 8,760-hour module-level simulation for P50, P75 and P90 yield, apply the current Einspeisevergütung and a self-consumption model to the financial output with the 0 per cent VAT rate handled correctly on residential jobs, then generate both the white-label Angebot and the VDE-labelled single-line diagram and Materialliste the electrician needs. Clara AI takes plain-language design instructions, and DXF export hands cleanly to the planning office.
Real pricing. About €1,725 (US$1,899) per user per year on Individual, €1,180 (US$1,299) per user per year on the 5-User Team plan, so €5,900 for five seats. Enterprise is quoted. Free trial, no credit card.
Who it suits. German installers, Solarteure and EPC firms doing five or more projects a month, and anyone mixing Einfamilienhaus work with Gewerbedach projects where self-consumption modelling decides the deal.
Honest limitations. SurgePV does not do monitoring at all, so the twenty-year operations job needs a separate platform, and in Germany that is not a small gap. It has no Handwerk field operations layer worth the name: no Monteur scheduling, no Arbeitszeiterfassung, no digital Bautagebuch. German brand recognition is thin against Valentin Software, whose name a Planungsbüro or a lender may simply expect on a technical report. The German-language interface and document templates are complete but the vocabulary occasionally reads as translated rather than native, which a detail-minded German customer notices. Marktstammdatenregister submission is not automated, so registration remains a manual step. And it does not integrate with DATEV, which means your bookkeeping still lives elsewhere.
2. Valentin Software PV*SOL premium
What it does best. PV*SOL is the German simulation standard, built in Berlin, and it is the tool a German technical audience recognises without explanation. Detailed 3D shading with visualisation, component-level electrical simulation, thermal behaviour, storage and heat pump interaction, and now a Rexplorer interface that imports 3D building models across Germany in a click. For a report attached to a Gewerbe proposal, the output carries weight that a cloud sales tool does not.
Real pricing. PVSOL premium is €845 per named user per year plus VAT, and standard PVSOL is €585. It is a user-based subscription: Valentin stopped selling perpetual licences on 19 November 2024 and maintenance renewals on the old perpetual licences ended on 1 October 2024, though existing perpetual licences remain usable indefinitely. Five premium seats is €4,225, which is less than the €5,900 SurgePV charges for five, and on price alone PV*SOL wins that comparison. What you get for the difference is one layer instead of four.
Who it suits. Planungsbüros, technical consultancies and installers whose customers ask for an Ertragsgutachten rather than a sales document.
Honest limitations. Desktop software with weak multi-user collaboration, no CRM, no proposal automation worth calling a proposal layer, and no field operations. Onboarding a new user takes real time. 3. PVsyst
What it does best. Bankability. When a German bank, an insurer or an independent technical advisor wants a second opinion on a 20 MW Freiflächenanlage in Brandenburg, the PVsyst loss diagram is the document they name. The near-shading and loss models are well documented and defensible under technical due diligence.
Real pricing. PVsyst bills in Swiss francs on an annual subscription, not a perpetual licence. Professional is CHF 700 per user per year, roughly €750 at about €1.07 per franc, with group discounts of 5 to 20 percent by quantity. Five seats is about CHF 3,500, comfortably under SurgePV’s €5,900 for five.
Who it suits. Independent engineers, technical due diligence teams and utility-scale developers producing yield reports for debt or equity.
Honest limitations. Desktop only, steep learning curve, no proposal layer, no CRM, no permitting output and no German document templates. It is a physics tool rather than a business tool. 4. Polysun
What it does best. Multi-energy simulation. Polysun, from Vela Solaris in Switzerland, models PV alongside heat pumps, thermal solar, storage and electric vehicle charging in one hourly system model. That matters more in Germany than almost anywhere else, because the German residential energy conversation is rarely about PV alone. It is about PV plus a Wärmepumpe plus a Speicher plus a Wallbox, and Polysun is the tool that can answer what that combination actually does across a year.
Real pricing. Not publicly listed. Vela Solaris sells Polysun either as a one-off purchase plus an annual service subscription or on a lease with a twelve-month minimum, and publishes no rate card, so the only reliable number is the one on your quote. A figure of around €699 circulates in software directories; it traces back to a 2013 price list and should not be used for budgeting.
Who it suits. Energieberater, Planungsbüros and installers selling combined heating and PV packages rather than standalone arrays.
Honest limitations. It is a simulation environment, not a sales platform. No automated 3D roof capture from an address, no branded proposal engine, no CRM, no field ops. Its PV design detail is weaker than PV*SOL’s, so a shading-critical roof may still want a second opinion. Licensing is quoted per module set, which makes the true cost hard to compare on a website.
5. SMA Sunny Portal and ennexOS
What it does best. Monitoring the installed base. SMA is a German manufacturer with an enormous fleet in the ground, and Sunny Portal, now extended by the ennexOS platform, gives per-plant production data, alerting, performance analysis and remote parameter access on SMA hardware. For an installer whose fleet is mostly Sunny Tripower and Sunny Boy, this is the layer you already have and should be using properly.
Real pricing. Included with the hardware for standard monitoring. Professional and O&M feature sets are licensed per plant.
Who it suits. Installers and O&M providers with an SMA-heavy fleet, which is a large share of the German market.
Honest limitations. Hardware locked. A mixed fleet with Fronius, SolarEdge, Huawei or Kostal inverters means four portals and no single view, which is exactly why hardware-agnostic platforms exist. No design, no proposals, no work orders, and the interface carries a decade of accumulated history.
6. Fronius Solar.web
What it does best. Residential monitoring and diagnostics with genuinely good installer tooling. Solar.web gives production and consumption data, energy flow visualisation, alerting and remote service access on Fronius inverters, and the customer app absorbs a meaningful share of support calls by letting the homeowner see their own system before they phone you.
Real pricing. Basic monitoring is free with the hardware. Premium features are a small per-inverter monthly fee.
Who it suits. Residential installers standardised on Fronius, particularly those selling self-consumption packages with a Wattpilot or Ohmpilot attached.
Honest limitations. Same hardware lock as SMA. No design, no proposals, no dispatch. Commercial and portfolio-scale reporting is thinner than a dedicated O&M platform, and performance ratio reporting is not at the level a Betreiber with a performance guarantee needs.
7. meteocontrol VCOM Cloud
What it does best. Commercial and utility-scale monitoring, from an Augsburg company that has been doing it since before most of its competitors existed. Hardware-agnostic data acquisition through its own dataloggers, performance ratio tracking against irradiance sensors, availability reporting, ticketing, and the production evidence that settles a Betriebsführung or warranty argument. If you carry a performance guarantee on a German commercial portfolio, this is the category you buy from.
Real pricing. Priced per plant and per megawatt, commonly a few hundred to a few thousand euros per site per year depending on capacity, data granularity and whether the datalogger is included.
Who it suits. Asset owners, Betriebsführer and EPCs carrying performance guarantees on Gewerbedach and Freifläche portfolios.
Honest limitations. No design, simulation, proposal or CRM capability whatsoever. Overkill for a residential fleet where the inverter portal is adequate. Commissioning takes engineering time and hardware per site. Solar-Log, also German, is the closer competitor for smaller mixed-brand commercial fleets and is often the cheaper answer below about 100 kWp.
8. weclapp
What it does best. The commercial spine. weclapp is a German cloud ERP and CRM with quoting, order management, purchasing, warehouse, project time recording and invoicing in one system, plus the DATEV interface your Steuerberater will ask about and GoBD-compliant record keeping. Hosting is in Germany, which removes an argument that a US-hosted CRM has to keep having with a German data protection officer.
Real pricing. Roughly €49 to €89 per user per month by tier, so about €2,900 to €5,300 a year for five users.
Who it suits. Installers past roughly ten employees whose quoting, purchasing and bookkeeping have drifted apart, and anyone whose Steuerberater has complained about exports.
Honest limitations. Generic ERP, not solar ERP. It knows nothing about kWp, string sizing, EEG tariffs or yield. The solar quote it produces is a line-item document, not a designed system. Setup takes real configuration effort and usually a partner. If your bottleneck is engineering rather than administration, this is the wrong first purchase. 9. openHandwerk
What it does best. The Handwerk layer, built in Berlin for German trades. Scheduling and Monteur dispatch, mobile app for the crew, Arbeitszeiterfassung, digital Bautagebuch, photo documentation against the job, material recording, and Aufmaß to invoice. For a Solarteur whose real constraint is getting four teams through a week without a double booking, and whose customers expect a complete handover folder, this is the layer that pays for itself fastest.
Real pricing. Roughly €20 to €40 per user per month, so about €1,200 to €2,400 a year for five users.
Who it suits. Installers running two or more crews, especially anyone also doing service calls, Wartung and warranty visits alongside new installs.
Honest limitations. It knows nothing about photovoltaics. No design, no simulation, no string sizing, no EEG. Commissioning records are generic job attachments rather than structured PV data, so you build your own checklists. Craftboxx, Streit V.1 and TAIFUN are the direct alternatives and the right one usually depends on which your Steuerberater and your existing Warenwirtschaft already talk to.
10. OpenSolar
What it does best. A free proposal and light design layer, funded by hardware referral margin, with a large template library and a low barrier to entry. For a small German installer who needs a presentable customer document tomorrow without a licence decision, it is a reasonable place to start.
Real pricing. The core platform is free and stays free. From 16 April 2026 OpenSolar begins charging for API Access on a per-project basis and for Connectors as a flat monthly fee, but the rates are not published and vary by region, so get them from OpenSolar rather than from any per-seat add-on range quoted elsewhere.
Who it suits. Solo installers and small teams doing straightforward residential work.
Honest limitations. The German regulatory layer is the thinnest of any platform here: Einspeisevergütung handling, VAT treatment and Solarspitzengesetz awareness all need manual template work. Its centre of gravity is the Australian, UK and US markets. Commercial rooftop exposes the ceiling quickly, and from April 2026 the API and Connector charges add a cost you cannot budget for in advance because OpenSolar has not published the rates. Verdict. Rank by the layer that is costing you money, not by feature count. If drawings and Angebote are slow, SurgePV. If a customer or a bank wants an Ertragsgutachten, PV*SOL or PVsyst. If the sale is a Wärmepumpe plus PV package, Polysun. If crews and reschedules are the mess, openHandwerk. If a commercial array is underperforming and nobody can prove why, meteocontrol.
What German Solar Software Must Encode
A tool built for another market fails a German project in specific, predictable ways, and the failures cut across all six layers.
Marktstammdatenregister. Every grid-connected generating plant must be registered in the MaStR run by the Bundesnetzagentur, and registration is a precondition for EEG payment. Miss it and the customer’s Einspeisevergütung does not arrive, which becomes your problem rather than theirs. The register and the registration rules sit with the Bundesnetzagentur. Very few design or proposal platforms automate this, so build it into your handover checklist rather than assuming the software will.
The EEG tariff and its degression. Since February 2026 the statutory rate for new systems up to 10 kWp is 7.78 ct/kWh for Überschusseinspeisung and 12.34 ct/kWh for Volleinspeisung, and since 2024 the degression steps down by one per cent every six months rather than monthly. A financial model with a hard-coded tariff from last year overstates every twenty-year cash flow you send. Above 100 kW, Direktvermarktung applies rather than a fixed tariff, which is a different financial model entirely and one that most residential-oriented tools cannot represent at all.
The 0 per cent VAT rate. Supply and installation of residential PV, including storage, carries a zero rate under §12 of the Umsatzsteuergesetz, published on gesetze-im-internet.de, rather than the standard 19 per cent. Proposal software with one global tax field forces manual edits on every quote, and a VAT error on a signed Angebot is expensive to unwind.
The Solarspitzengesetz. Since 25 February 2025, new plants receive no feed-in payment during hours of negative market prices, with the uncompensated hours added to the end of the twenty-year support period, and new systems without an intelligent metering system are throttled to 60 per cent of maximum feed-in capacity. Both facts change the yield and the revenue in a proposal. A model that ignores the throttle will overstate output on precisely the plants that do not get a smart meter.
📘 Regulation note
Connection answers to VDE-AR-N 4105 for low voltage and VDE-AR-N 4110 for medium voltage, with the Netzbetreiber approving the Anmeldung before commissioning. Controllable consumption devices such as heat pumps and wallboxes fall under §14a EnWG, which allows the network operator to reduce their draw. Any tool modelling a heat pump self-consumption benefit without acknowledging that is modelling an optimistic case.
Why German Buyers Expect More Documentation
This is the difference that catches installers expanding into Germany from the UK or the US, and it sits mostly in the field operations layer rather than the design one. A German customer, and certainly a German commercial customer, expects a handover folder, and expects it to be complete.
A typical Übergabedokumentation contains the Anlagenübersicht and layout, the Schaltplan, datasheets and Konformitätserklärungen for every component, the Inbetriebnahmeprotokoll, the test and measurement record under DIN EN 62446-1 including insulation resistance and string current readings, the MaStR registration confirmation, the Netzbetreiber correspondence, the Wartungsplan and the warranty documents. In the UK the equivalent bundle is thinner and the customer rarely opens it. In Germany the customer reads it, files it, and produces it four years later when a module fails.
That has three software consequences most roundups never mention:
- Structured commissioning capture beats free-text notes. String test values, inverter settings and photos held against the asset in the field tool, not in an email thread, so the technician diagnosing a fault in year eight can see year one.
- The design tool has to export clean drawings. A Schaltplan and a Materialliste that the electrician can hand to the Netzbetreiber without redrawing is a real time saving, and it is why plan-set output belongs in the same licence as the design.
- The monitoring platform is part of the deliverable, not an afterthought. German customers expect a portal login on handover, and the performance ratio they see there becomes the number they judge you by.
Do this well and the referral rate justifies the admin. Do it badly and you will spend the warranty period reconstructing records. Monitoring and O&M: The Layer German Installers Under-Buy
Monitoring is the layer nobody buys deliberately and everybody eventually needs. In Germany it is unusual because the hardware has already decided most of it for you.
SMA, Fronius and SolarEdge together account for a very large share of installed German inverter capacity, and each ships a capable portal at no extra cost: Sunny Portal and ennexOS, Solar.web, and SolarEdge Monitoring respectively. For a residential fleet standardised on one brand, that is genuinely enough. The problem arrives at mixed fleets. An installer with six years of history typically has SMA on the older roofs, Fronius on the middle years, SolarEdge where shading demanded optimisers and Huawei or Kostal on the price-sensitive jobs. Four portals, four logins, four alert formats and no fleet view is how a service department loses a whole day a week.
The switch to a hardware-agnostic platform such as meteocontrol VCOM or Solar-Log is a commercial decision, not a technical one, and the trigger is usually one of three things: a performance guarantee you have to prove, a Betriebsführung contract you have sold, or a service headcount you can no longer justify. Practical O&M software behaviour worth insisting on for Germany:
- Weather-normalised performance ratio. With an irradiance source you trust, because the argument with a customer or a warranty provider happens in units of performance ratio, not kilowatt-hours.
- String-level comparison. Alerting that flags one string underperforming its neighbours rather than only flagging total zero output, which is the difference between catching a failing connector and catching a dead inverter.
- Negative-price and throttle awareness. Under the Solarspitzengesetz a plant can be legitimately curtailed. A monitoring platform that reports that as a fault will send you on truck rolls you did not need.
- Ticket continuity. The alert becomes a scheduled visit in the field system your crews already use, which is where openHandwerk earns its place beside the monitoring platform. A useful starting template for the visit itself is this annual maintenance checklist.
The Stack a German Installer Should Actually Buy
Layer coverage is theory. This is the prescription, by business type, in euros, based on what our own team and our channel partners run. Every one of these is two or three paid licences, not one and not six.
- Solo Solarteur or two-person shop, up to 3 jobs a month. OpenSolar free or a single SurgePV seat for design and proposals, plus the inverter brand’s own monitoring portal, which costs nothing. One paid licence, roughly €0 to €1,725 a year. Do not buy an ERP yet. A spreadsheet and a calendar are genuinely sufficient below about thirty jobs a year, and a half-configured ERP is worse than none.
- Residential installer, 10 to 20 jobs a month, two crews. SurgePV for design, simulation and Angebote, plus openHandwerk for dispatch, time recording and the handover documentation, plus the inverter portal for monitoring. Two paid licences, roughly €7,100 to €8,300 a year for five users. This is the most common German shape and openHandwerk is the one that visibly changes the week.
- Installer selling PV plus Wärmepumpe packages. SurgePV or OpenSolar for the PV design and customer document, plus Polysun for the combined system model that justifies the heat pump sizing, plus openHandwerk. Two to three licences, roughly €7,100 to €8,300 a year plus whatever Vela Solaris quotes for Polysun, which it does not publish. Do not try to answer the heat pump question inside a PV tool.
- Gewerbe and industrial EPC. SurgePV for design, proposals and VDE plan sets, plus PVsyst or PVSOL when a bank, an insurer or a technical advisor names the report format, plus meteocontrol VCOM where you carry a performance guarantee. Three licences, roughly €6,650 a year with a single PVsyst seat alongside SurgePV, rising to about €10,100 if you buy five PVSOL premium named users instead, plus per-plant monitoring fees.
- Established Solarteur past ten employees. SurgePV for engineering and proposals, plus weclapp for quoting, purchasing, invoicing and the DATEV interface, plus openHandwerk or the weclapp field module for crews. Two to three licences, roughly €8,800 to €13,600 a year. The engineering licence is the one people try to cut here, and it is the one that prevents the change orders.
