A Huawei FusionSolar Design review has to start by naming the thing correctly, because the search term and the product name have drifted apart. Huawei does not publish a product called FusionSolar Design. It publishes SmartDesign 2.0, a browser based design tool that sits inside the FusionSolar installer portal alongside the SmartPVMS monitoring platform. Installers call it FusionSolar Design because that is the portal they log into. The distinction matters for a review, because it tells you what the tool is: not a standalone design product competing on features, but a sales instrument attached to the largest string inverter business in the world. Huawei publishes no price for it, and access comes with the installer account you already hold if you commission SUN2000 inverters. We have used it against paid platforms on our own project pipeline at Heaven Green Energy, and the verdict is narrow but genuine.
Direct answer. Huawei FusionSolar Design is published as SmartDesign 2.0 and carries no publicly listed price, with access through a FusionSolar installer account. Inside an all Huawei system it does satellite roof modelling, automatic module layout, one click electrical design and tariff aware storage sizing well. It scores 33 of 50 on our bench. Its published hardware list covers Huawei equipment only, and we could not find a published independent simulation validation for it.
This review treats SmartDesign as a stack decision rather than a purchase decision, because there is nothing to purchase. What follows is where it beats tools you pay for, where it stops dead, and the specific installer for whom it is the correct primary tool. What Huawei FusionSolar Design Is
SmartDesign 2.0 is a web based PV design and reporting tool published by Huawei Digital Power, the division behind the SUN2000 string inverter family, the Smart PV Optimiser, and the LUNA2000 battery. Huawei’s own product page describes it plainly: SmartDesign 2.0 helps installers “complete the design of the whole PV system and automatically generate analysis reports.”
The published feature set on Huawei’s SmartDesign 2.0 product page is short and specific. Satellite view removes the need for a site survey. PV modules are automatically arranged. Electrical design is one click and automatic. Storage capacity is recommended against electricity cost rather than left to the designer. Multiple solutions can be compared side by side, and the site is presented as a 3D model for the customer.
Access is the part people get wrong. There is no separate SmartDesign signup. Huawei’s own SmartDesign 2.0 user documentation states that if you already hold a SmartPVMS management system installer account, you use that account to reach SmartDesign without registering again, and new users complete an installer registration instead. That single sentence explains the entire commercial design of the tool. It is bundled with the credential that Huawei issues to people who install Huawei hardware.
The workflow itself is fast in a way that surprises people who expect a manufacturer tool to be a spreadsheet with a logo. You enter an address, the satellite view loads, the tool builds a rough building model, and module placement runs automatically across the usable roof planes. You then adjust, and the electrical design follows: string configuration, inverter selection from the SUN2000 range, optimiser placement where the design calls for it, and a storage recommendation if you have entered a tariff. The output is a report you can hand a customer.

Thirty three is a good score for a tool with no published price. It loses points where every manufacturer tool loses them, on hardware neutrality and on the documents a permit office wants. It gains them on electrical automation, which is the one area where Huawei has built something most free tools have not.
Verdict. If Huawei inverters are on most of your bills of materials, SmartDesign is the right primary design tool and it will cost you nothing beyond the installer relationship you already have. If your inverter brand changes job to job, we would not run SmartDesign as your design tool, because on the published hardware list the design has to be rebuilt when the inverter changes.
Pricing
Huawei does not publicly list a price for SmartDesign 2.0. We checked the global SmartDesign product page and the FusionSolar professionals page on 2 August 2026 and neither carries a price, a plan table, a seat count or a project limit. We are not going to invent one to fill a table cell.
What Huawei does document is the access route. The registration section of the SmartDesign user manual describes reaching the tool with an existing SmartPVMS installer account, or completing an installer registration. In practice that means the tool is available at no charge to Huawei’s installer channel, and the commercial logic is identical to every other manufacturer design tool: Huawei earns on SUN2000 inverters, Smart PV Optimisers and LUNA2000 batteries, so the design software is a cost of selling hardware.
💰 Real numbers
The licence fee is zero and the real cost is a hardware commitment. If a SUN2000 plus optimiser package sits above a comparable string inverter on your BOQ, that difference across a year of installs is what you actually paid for the software.
The cost that does appear on an invoice is the second tool. SmartDesign’s electrical design output is not a stamped permit drawing, and it produces no probabilistic yield, so an installer submitting commercial applications or dealing with a lender still needs a platform alongside it. What Huawei FusionSolar Design Does Best
The strongest thing about SmartDesign is not the roof model. It is that the electrical design is automatic, and in our testing it held up, because Huawei wrote both the tool and the equipment it is configuring.
“One click automatic electrical design” is the phrase on Huawei’s own page, and it is not marketing filler. In most design tools, electrical configuration is where a junior designer loses an afternoon: which modules go on which string, how many optimisers per string, whether the string voltage stays inside the inverter window at record low temperature, whether the MPPT inputs are balanced. SmartDesign resolves that from the manufacturer’s own compatibility rules. There is no interpretation layer between the datasheet and the validation, because they come from the same company. Two more things it does genuinely well.
Tariff aware storage sizing. Huawei’s page describes “smart recommendation of energy storage capacity for optimal electricity cost.” That is a different exercise from sizing a battery to a percentage of daily load. It takes the tariff you enter and finds the capacity where the marginal kWh of storage stops paying for itself. Most free design tools either skip storage entirely or hand you a slider. On residential jobs where a customer is deciding whether to add a LUNA2000 at all, having the tool produce the answer rather than the salesperson can make that conversation a lot easier.
Multi solution comparison in the customer document. Rather than one design and one number, SmartDesign will build several configurations and put cost against benefit side by side. Huawei’s own copy is “cost and benefit at a glance, making it easier to choose.” Presenting a homeowner with three options and letting them pick is a better sales motion than presenting one and defending it, and very few free tools build the comparison for you.
The third quiet advantage is continuity. The account that designs the system is the account that monitors it after commissioning, because SmartDesign and SmartPVMS share a login. The as built layout and the live performance data end up in the same place, which most software stacks lose at handover.

Where Huawei FusionSolar Design Falls Short
These are boundaries rather than bugs, and they decide whether SmartDesign can be your only tool.

Huawei hardware, and nothing else. The inverter list is SUN2000, the optimiser is Huawei's Smart PV Optimiser, the battery is LUNA2000. As of August 2026 we found no path to a Sungrow, Fronius or SMA inverter and no [microinverter](/glossary/microinverter) option in the tool or on Huawei's published pages. A hardware change means rebuilding the design somewhere else.

No published independent simulation validation. SolarEdge commissioned and published a DNV GL comparison against PVsyst for its own free tool. We could not find an equivalent published third party validation for SmartDesign's energy model. That is not evidence the model is wrong, but it means you cannot cite a credential when a customer questions the yield.

Electrical design is not a permit set. Automatic electrical configuration is not the same thing as a drafted, dimensioned, stamped single line diagram. Any submission that needs a drawing office signature needs that drawing produced elsewhere.

No probabilistic yield bands. You get an expected annual figure. Lenders and project finance desks ask for P50, P75 and P90, so the report does not travel to a bank on its own.

Shade input is modelled, not surveyed. Obstructions are drawn against satellite imagery and entered by hand. There is no LiDAR import and no drone photogrammetry, so a heavily treed site carries real uncertainty.
⚠️ Watch out
Procurement restrictions and utility approval friction on Huawei hardware have been reported in several markets, and none of that has anything to do with the software. Confirm the inverter is approvable in your market before you build a design workflow around a tool that can only specify it.
There is a sixth item that is not a shortcoming so much as a caution. Because the tool is bundled with the installer account, we could not find a published product roadmap, release notes or regional availability matrix for it the way a paid platform usually publishes one. That is a different kind of dependency from a subscription you can renew or cancel.
Who Should Buy Huawei FusionSolar Design
Nobody buys it, so the honest question is who should make it their primary design tool.

The reader for whom SmartDesign beats everything else, including SurgePV, is the Huawei committed residential and small commercial installer doing 5 to 50 rooftop jobs a year in a market where SUN2000 approval is routine, with an external drafting partner for permits and no lender in the loop. That installer should spend nothing on design software. Selling them a paid seat means selling them hardware neutrality they may never use, and asking them to give up electrical automation that, in our testing, no brand neutral tool matched for Huawei equipment.
Who Should Not
Two groups, and only one of them is obvious.
The obvious group is the brand neutral installer. If you quote Huawei on one job and Sungrow on the next, SmartDesign forces a rebuild every time the inverter changes, and rebuilds are where design errors get introduced. Our best solar design software ranking sets out the neutral field.
The less obvious group is the installer whose market has policy exposure to Huawei. This is specific to inverters in a way it is not to modules. Restrictions and formal reviews of Chinese origin inverters in grid connected roles have been reported in several jurisdictions, and utility or government tenders in those markets can exclude the hardware. Check the current position in your own market rather than relying on this page. If your pipeline includes public sector or utility work, building your design habits inside a tool that can only specify one manufacturer creates a commercial risk that has nothing to do with software quality. Keep a neutral platform in the office even if Huawei wins most of your private jobs.

Huawei FusionSolar Design vs SurgePV

On our bench SmartDesign scores ahead on electrical automation inside one manufacturer’s catalogue and on price, and SurgePV scores ahead on the axes that involve choosing hardware, supporting a yield figure to a lender, or producing a document in the format a permit office asks for. A Huawei heavy installer who occasionally needs a permit set and a P90 can legitimately run both and pay for one.
