Industrial rooftop solar for factories in Surat.

Surat's mills, loom sheds and polishing floors draw most of their power in daylight, which is when a rooftop plant produces. We are headquartered at Mota Varachha, buy modules as an authorised channel partner of Adani and fit Qbits inverters. We size the plant on your bills and file with whichever licensee serves the connection.

The short answer

Industrial rooftop solar in Surat suits dyeing and printing houses, loom sheds, embroidery units and diamond factories, because their machines run in daylight. Each kilowatt yields 4 to 4.5 units a day, so 500 kW makes about 7.3 to 8.2 lakh units a year. Factories get no PM Surya Ghar subsidy; they claim 40% accelerated depreciation. DGVCL or Torrent Power approves the connection, depending on which one bills you.

Surat industry

Four kinds of Surat factory, four different load curves

Surat is not one industrial load. A processing house, a loom shed, an embroidery floor and a diamond unit each draw power differently, and the plant that suits one would be wrongly sized for another.

Wikipedia describes Surat as India's largest centre for man-made fibre textiles, with dyeing and printing mills, power looms and zari work. It also names Surat as the city where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Petrochemicals, steel and port activity sit around Hazira on the western edge. Those industries are spread across several estates, and each has its own page: Sachin GIDC, Pandesara GIDC, the Hazira belt and Kadodara and Palsana.

This page covers what those estate pages share, plus the factories that sit outside any estate. Many embroidery and diamond units in Surat work from upper floors of mixed buildings in the city, not from sheds on a GIDC plot. For them the roof is often shared, and ownership of the terrace decides the project before any engineering does.

The other shared question is the licensee. Surat has two, and an estate name on your letterhead does not tell you which one bills you. Read the bill first. The licensee section below explains what to look for.

Dyeing, printing and processing houses

Heat in a processing house usually comes from boilers and thermic fluid heaters burning fuel, so solar does not replace it. Electricity drives the rest: dyeing machine pumps and motors, stenter fans and drives, printing lines, effluent treatment blowers and water pumps. That electrical load runs through the day shift, close to the solar curve.

Weaving sheds: rapier, air-jet and water-jet looms

Loom sheds often run round the clock in two long shifts. Air-jet looms add a heavy compressor load on top of the loom motors. A rooftop plant covers only the daylight hours, so we size it against the units used between morning and late afternoon, not the full monthly total on the bill.

Embroidery units

Computerised multi-head embroidery machines draw a steady, moderate load per head, plus lighting and air conditioning. Many units are small, on low-tension connections, and work from rented floors. The plant is limited by the terrace you can use and the sanctioned load on your own connection, so we check both before sizing.

Diamond cutting and polishing

Polishing wheels, laser and planning machines, bright task lighting and air conditioning give diamond floors a dense daytime load in a small footprint. The roof is rarely large enough to cover it all. A compact, high-output layout on an elevated structure gets the most units out of a limited terrace.

How the numbers work

Sizing a Surat factory plant in units, not rupees

A factory plant is judged by the daylight units it removes from your grid purchase. We do not put a rupee saving on this page, because it depends on your tariff category, demand charges and how much output you consume on site.

Daylight units first. A shadow-free Surat roof yields 4 to 4.5 units per kW per day across the year. A 100 kW plant gives about 1.46 to 1.64 lakh units a year, and 500 kW about 7.3 to 8.2 lakh. The useful comparison is with the units your meter records in production hours. A processing house running a long day shift will absorb nearly all of it. A loom shed working nights absorbs less, so the plant is smaller in proportion to the bill.

Your connection caps the plant. DGVCL or Torrent Power checks a rooftop proposal against your sanctioned load or contract demand. Solar also cuts units more reliably than it cuts the maximum demand your meter records, because the machines can still pull full load in a cloudy hour. We read twelve months of bills, including the demand line, before we recommend a size.

Tax replaces the subsidy. PM Surya Ghar is residential only. A taxpaying factory claims 40% accelerated depreciation on solar power generating systems under Appendix I of the Income Tax Rules. Since 22 Sep 2025, GST is 5% on solar equipment and 18% on the service share, taken as 30% of a turnkey contract, which blends to about 8.9%. For reference, a 25 kW plant sits in an indicative installed band of ₹10.75 lakh to ₹13.50 lakh, roughly ₹43,000 to ₹54,000 per kW. Anything bigger is priced after a load study, because roof type, structure height and cable distance change the cost per kW.

250 kW3,65,000 – 4,10,625

Roofs in Surat factories: sheds, slabs and shared terraces

Surat factories sit under three kinds of roof, and each needs a different structure. Three checks come first: what the roof carries, how the array survives wind and salt air, and how it connects.

Metal sheds, RCC slabs and rented terraces

GIDC sheds need purlin size, spacing and sheet condition measured before any load is added. RCC slabs on city buildings carry weight more easily but are crowded with tanks and stair heads. On a rented or shared terrace, we ask for the owner's written consent before design, because the plant stays on that roof for twenty-five years.

Wind, salt air and fire access

Surat is close to the Gulf of Khambhat, and units towards Hazira and the western edge get salt-laden air. We specify galvanising and fasteners for that exposure and design for wind at your roof height. Walkways, skylight clearance and fire access stay open, and every sheet penetration is sealed against the monsoon.

Protection, metering and the licensee interface

Qbits inverters sit near the main panel to keep AC runs short. The design carries isolators, surge protection, earthing and the metering arrangement your licensee asks for. On an HT connection the plant ties in on the LT side behind your transformer. Drawings show that interface clearly for the inspection.

DGVCL or Torrent Power, by connection

Approvals: who does what.

The approval route is the same in outline for DGVCL and Torrent Power, but the forms and offices differ. We prepare the file for whichever licensee is printed on your bill.

1

Confirm the licensee and connection

We read the licensee name, consumer number, tariff category, connection type and sanctioned load off your bill. This decides the office, the forms and the maximum plant size before we draw anything.

Us
2

Design and rooftop application

We file the plant rating, single-line diagram, roof layout and equipment datasheets with your consumer details. The licensee tests the request against your connection and the local network, then approves or asks for changes.

Us, then DGVCL or Torrent Power
3

Installation and safety documents

We install to the approved drawings and compile test reports, earthing values and protection settings. Where your plant size needs a clearance from the Electrical Inspectorate, we prepare and follow that file too.

Us
4

Inspection, metering and connection

The licensee inspects the plant and fits or certifies the meters. Generation counts on your bill only from the date of connection, not from the day installation finished, so we attend to close queries quickly.

DGVCL or Torrent Power
Paying for it

Three ways to fund the plant.

Three ways Surat factories pay for a plant. The right one depends on your tax position, cash flow and whether you own the roof.

Buy it outright

Your firm owns the plant and claims 40% accelerated depreciation from the year it is put to use. This suits a profitable unit that owns its shed or building. All generation is yours, and an annual maintenance contract covers cleaning, inspections, inverter checks and the yearly performance report.

Term loan or equipment finance

Banks and NBFCs finance rooftop plants for MSMEs, and you still own the asset for depreciation. We provide the quotation, bill of materials and units estimate a lender asks for. The lender sets the rate, tenure and security, so compare offers on total cost rather than the instalment.

Third-party ownership (OPEX or RESCO)

A developer owns the plant on your roof and bills you for the units it delivers. You spend no capital and claim no depreciation. This route needs a roof you control for the contract term, which rules out many rented city floors. Read the buy-out, exit and roof-access clauses closely.

Where we work from

Surat is our home city. Heaven Green Energy's only office is at Mota Varachha, and the engineers who survey your roof, supervise installation and attend the licensee inspection are based here. Whether your unit is in an estate on the city's edge or on an upper floor in Varachha, the work is done by our own team.

01

Bill review · Day 1

You send twelve months of bills. We identify the licensee, tariff category, sanctioned load and demand history, and tell you honestly if the roof is too small to bother.

02

Site and load survey · Week 1

An engineer inspects the roof, structure, shading, cable route and main panel. For mixed shift patterns we log the load for a few days to see the real daytime curve.

03

Design and written proposal · Week 2

You get a layout, single-line diagram, bill of materials with makes and quantities, and monthly generation in units. The price follows from that design.

04

Approval and installation · Weeks 3 to 8

We file with DGVCL or Torrent Power, procure Adani modules and Qbits inverters, and schedule roof work around your shifts so production does not stop.

05

Connection and maintenance · After approval

The licensee inspects and connects the plant. We hand over test reports and warranties, switch on monitoring and begin the agreed maintenance schedule.

Six things to check with any vendor.

  1. Surat factories are billed by DGVCL or by Torrent Power, and the licensee printed on your bill decides where the rooftop file goes.
  2. Each kilowatt yields 4 to 4.5 units a day, so a 500 kW plant makes about 7.3 to 8.2 lakh units a year.
  3. Processing houses match the solar curve closely; round-the-clock loom sheds need a plant sized on daytime units only.
  4. Diamond and embroidery units in city buildings are limited by terrace area and ownership more than by load.
  5. Factories claim 40% accelerated depreciation instead of PM Surya Ghar, and GST on a turnkey plant blends to about 8.9%.
  6. Above 25 kW, the price comes from a load study and a roof survey, not a rate card.
Questions

Industrial solar in Surat, answered.

Cost & output

What does industrial rooftop solar cost in Surat?
For a 25 kW plant the indicative installed band in Gujarat is ₹10.75 lakh to ₹13.50 lakh, about ₹43,000 to ₹54,000 per kW. Larger factory plants are priced after a load study, because roof type, structure height, cable runs and metering vary widely. Every quotation comes with a written bill of materials.
How much will a 500 kW plant generate on a Surat factory roof?
About 7.3 to 8.2 lakh units a year, from 4 to 4.5 units per kW per day on a shadow-free roof. The monsoon months produce less and the dry months more. Your proposal shows the estimate month by month, so you can lay it against your own production calendar.
My loom shed runs day and night. Is solar still worth it?
It can be, sized correctly. A rooftop plant only covers daylight hours, so we size it against the units your shed uses between morning and late afternoon. Night shifts stay on grid power. Sizing on the full monthly bill would oversize the plant and push more units into export than you need.

Licensee & approvals

How do I know whether DGVCL or Torrent Power serves my factory?
Look at the top of your electricity bill. It names the licensee, your consumer number and the office that handles your connection. Torrent Power is licensed for part of Surat city; DGVCL serves the rest of the district. Units inside an SEZ should also check the bill, as zones can have separate arrangements.
Does an industrial estate have one licensee for every unit?
Do not assume it. The licensee follows the licence area and your connection, not the estate's name. Our estate pages state what we verified for each, but your bill is the final word. We confirm the licensee from it before preparing any drawings or applications.
Who sets net metering and banking rules for Surat factories?
The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission, read with the Gujarat Solar Power Policy. DGVCL and Torrent Power apply those rules; they do not write them, and neither does any installer. The terms vary by consumer category, so we confirm the current position for your connection in writing before fixing the plant size.

Roof & engineering

Can a diamond unit on an upper floor put solar on the terrace?
Only with the building owner's or society's written consent, and only on terrace area you can use for the life of the plant. The connection the plant joins must be your own. Where terrace space is tight, an elevated structure above tanks and stair heads recovers usable area.
Is a GIDC shed roof strong enough for panels?
Often, but it must be measured. We check purlin size and spacing, sheet profile and age, then calculate the added dead load and wind load. If the purlins are light, we propose strengthening or a lighter layout. If the sheeting is near the end of its life, replace it first.
Does salt air near Hazira change the hardware?
Yes. Factories towards Hazira and the western edge of Surat face salt-laden air, which corrodes thin galvanising and ordinary fasteners first. We specify coating thickness and fastener grade for that exposure and put it in the bill of materials, so you can hold us to it.

Finance & tax

Can a factory in Surat claim the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
No. PM Surya Ghar covers residential consumers. A factory claims 40% accelerated depreciation on solar power generating systems under Appendix I of the Income Tax Rules instead. Ask your chartered accountant how that interacts with your firm's profits before choosing between ownership and a third-party model.
What GST does a factory pay on a turnkey solar plant?
About 8.9% blended since 22 Sep 2025. Solar equipment carries 5% GST and services carry 18%, with the service share of a supply-and-install contract taken as 30%. A GST-registered business may be able to claim input tax credit, which your accountant should confirm.
