Industrial rooftop solar for factories in Ahmedabad.

Ahmedabad's factories sit on two different licensees, and the estate you are in decides which one reviews your solar file. We design shed-roof plants for units across Vatva, Naroda, Changodar and Sanand, using modules from an authorised channel partner of Adani and Qbits inverters. We then file the papers with Torrent Power or UGVCL.

The short answer

Industrial rooftop solar in Ahmedabad produces 4 to 4.5 units per kW each day, so a 500 kW shed plant yields roughly 7.3 to 8.2 lakh units a year. Torrent Power reviews the file inside its city licence area; UGVCL handles Changodar, Sanand and other district estates. Factories claim 40% accelerated depreciation. Plants above 25 kW are priced only after a load study.

Ahmedabad's industrial estates

One district, several estates, two licensees

Ahmedabad's factory belts differ in age, roof stock and grid supplier. The planning question for solar is the same everywhere: how much of your daytime draw can the roof carry, and which licensee signs the connection.

The older estates sit on the city's eastern and south-eastern edge. Vatva GIDC and Naroda GIDC are long-established GIDC estates, and Naroda appears among GIDC's chemical estates. Units there often run reactors, dryers, effluent pumps and compressors through the day. Older sheds are common, so the survey starts with the sheeting and purlins, not the panel count.

West of the city the picture changes. Changodar is an industrial belt beyond the city limits, served by UGVCL's Changodar sub-division under its Bopal division. Further out, Sanand GIDC serves a manufacturing hub where GIDC has acquired around 5,000 acres, and GIDC tells Sanand plot holders to apply to UGVCL for power. Newer buildings here usually have larger, cleaner roof spans.

So an Ahmedabad postal address does not settle the licensee. Torrent Power distributes inside its Ahmedabad licence area; UGVCL supplies most of the rest of the district. UGVCL also runs Naroda and Naroda Urban sub-divisions, which is why a Naroda unit should read its bill header before anyone drafts a single drawing.

Chemical and process units

Batch reactors, dryers, chillers and effluent treatment pumps draw steadily from morning shift to evening. That profile suits solar well, because most of the plant's output is consumed on site as it is generated. Corrosive fumes near vents change the choice of structure coating and module spacing.

Engineering and fabrication shops

Machining centres, welding sets and air compressors create peaky loads that rise and fall with job orders. Solar shaves the daytime base rather than the peaks. We size against the lowest steady daytime draw in your bills so that exports stay small and predictable.

Textile and garment units

Looms, processing machines and humidification run long hours across the year. Shed roofs in older textile belts are often asbestos or thin sheeting, so the plant may need a walkway layout or a separate structure. Dust from processing also raises the cleaning frequency we plan for.

Auto components and newer plants

Sanand and Changodar factories often have pre-engineered buildings with long, uniform spans and higher sanctioned loads. These roofs take larger plants with simple layouts. The constraint shifts from roof strength to export rules, because daytime demand may still fall below output on weekends.

How the numbers work

How the numbers work for an Ahmedabad factory

A factory plant pays back through units it avoids buying during the day. Rupee figures depend on your own tariff category, so we work in units first and price the plant only after reading your bills.

Start with generation. Each installed kW in Ahmedabad produces 4 to 4.5 units a day across the year, or about 1,460 to 1,640 units annually. A 100 kW plant therefore gives 1.46 to 1.64 lakh units a year, and a 500 kW plant 7.3 to 8.2 lakh. These figures assume a clean, shadow-free roof facing roughly south.

Next, match that output to your daytime draw. A unit running two shifts consumes nearly all of its solar output on site. A single-shift unit that shuts on Sundays exports more, and the value of exported units depends on the GERC order in force on your commissioning date. We plot your consumption against expected generation hour by hour. We also check sanctioned load and contract demand, because they limit the plant size the licensee will accept. Solar trims the energy you draw but rarely cuts the peak demand charge.

Then the tax position. Solar power generating systems qualify for 40% accelerated depreciation under Appendix I of the Income Tax Rules, which our depreciation guide sets out. Since 22 September 2025, GST is 5% on solar equipment and 18% on the 30% service share of a supply-and-install contract, about 8.9% blended. For a 25 kW plant, the Gujarat market band is ₹10.75 lakh to ₹13.50 lakh, about ₹43,000 to ₹54,000 per kW. Anything larger is priced after a load study.

Generation from verified Gujarat constants (4 to 4.5 units per kW per day)
Plant sizeUnits a year
25 kW36,500 – 41,063
50 kW73,000 – 82,125
100 kW1,46,000 – 1,64,250
250 kW3,65,000 – 4,10,625
500 kW7,30,000 – 8,21,250

Indicative installed cost at 25 kW: ₹10.75–13.50 lakh (market range, not a quotation). Larger plants are priced after a load study of your bills and roof.

Engineering a shed-roof plant in Ahmedabad

Most failures on factory roofs come from the building, not the panels. We check the roof, the structure and the electrical connection before we commit to a plant size.

Roof condition and type

We record sheeting type, gauge, age, fixings and any leaks, then map vents, skylights and chimneys that cast shade. Old asbestos or rusted sheeting in the eastern estates may need replacement or a raised structure first. If the roof cannot carry the plant safely, we tell you before the proposal.

Structure, wind and safety

Purlin spacing and section decide how the mounting rail transfers load. Our design checks dead load and wind uplift for the site, with galvanised steel or aluminium chosen for the local air. We plan walkways, lifelines and access points, because cleaning crews walk this roof for twenty-five years.

Electrical design and approvals

We draw the single-line diagram from your panel schedule, place inverters near the main board and size cables for low losses. Protection, earthing and isolation follow the licensee's technical requirements. The same file then goes to Torrent Power or UGVCL, along with the electrical inspector's clearance where the plant size requires it.

Torrent Power / UGVCL

Approvals: who does what.

The approval path follows your licensee, not your street address. We confirm Torrent Power or UGVCL from the bill header first, then prepare the file in that licensee's format.

1

Load study and plant design

We read twelve months of bills, sanctioned load and connection category, survey the roof, then fix plant size, layout and single-line diagram. A wrong sanctioned load in this file is the commonest reason a factory application is returned.

Us
2

Application to the licensee

We submit the rooftop application on your consumer number with drawings and equipment details. The licensee checks feasibility against your load and the local transformer. Torrent Power and UGVCL each use their own portal and format.

Us, then Torrent Power or UGVCL
3

Installation and inspection

We install only after technical approval. On completion we arrange the inspection, with our engineer present to answer questions on earthing, isolation and protection settings. Any electrical inspector clearance needed for the plant size is obtained before metering.

Us
4

Metering and synchronisation

The licensee fits or seals the net or bidirectional meter and authorises synchronisation. Billing then nets your exports and imports under the GERC order applicable to your connection. We hand over the commissioning records for your files.

Torrent Power or UGVCL
Paying for it

Three ways to fund the plant.

Factories usually fund solar through cash, a term loan or an MSME loan. The choice depends on your tax position and existing credit lines, not on the plant itself.

Own capital

Paying from reserves gives you the full 40% accelerated depreciation in the year the plant is put to use. How much you claim in the first year depends on when the plant is put to use, so your accountant should confirm the timing against your financial year.

Term loan or MSME credit

Banks lend against solar as plant and machinery, and many MSMEs add it to an existing working capital or term loan relationship. The loan does not change the depreciation claim. We supply the proposal, bill of materials and generation estimate that a bank's credit team asks for.

Staged plants

If capital is tight, you can install the strongest roof sections first and extend later. We design the first stage so the inverter room, cable routes and earthing can take the second stage. Each extension still needs a fresh application to your licensee.

From enquiry to export

How the project runs.

From first bill to synchronised plant, an Ahmedabad factory project follows five stages. Licensee timelines vary, so we track each step openly.

01

Bills and licensee check · Day 1 to 2

You send twelve months of bills and your plot details. We confirm Torrent Power or UGVCL, read sanctioned load and daytime consumption, and tell you if a survey is worth doing.

02

Roof and load survey · Week 1

Engineers inspect sheeting, purlins, shade and the main panel. We log vents, skylights and access points, then measure usable area against your daytime load pattern.

03

Design and proposal · Week 2

You receive the plant layout, single-line diagram, generation estimate in units and a written bill of materials. Price follows the load study, never before it.

04

Approval and installation · Licensee dependent

We file the application, wait for technical approval, then install. Work is planned around your shifts so production is not stopped for roof access or shutdowns.

05

Inspection and handover · After installation

The licensee inspects and meters the plant. We commission it, hand over records and monitoring access, and start the maintenance schedule agreed in your contract.

Before you sign

Six things to check with any vendor.

  1. Your bill header, not your postal address, tells you whether Torrent Power or UGVCL reviews the file.
  2. Each kW produces 4 to 4.5 units a day; a 500 kW shed plant yields about 7.3 to 8.2 lakh units a year.
  3. Size the plant to your steady daytime draw, checked against sanctioned load and contract demand.
  4. Older roofs in Vatva and Naroda need a sheeting and purlin check before any layout is drawn.
  5. Solar systems qualify for 40% accelerated depreciation; GST on a turnkey plant is about 8.9% blended.
  6. Plants above 25 kW are priced only after a load study, so treat any instant quote with caution.
Questions

Industrial solar in Ahmedabad, answered.

Cost & output

How much will a factory solar plant cost in Ahmedabad?
Plants above 25 kW are priced after a load study, because roof work, structure and cable runs vary a lot between sheds. For reference, a 25 kW plant in Gujarat sits in a band of ₹10.75 lakh to ₹13.50 lakh. Larger plants usually cost less per kW, but we quote only after surveying.
How many units will a 100 kW plant generate?
About 1.46 to 1.64 lakh units a year. That comes from 4 to 4.5 units per kW per day, the annual average for Ahmedabad on a clean, shadow-free roof. Dust, shade from vents and poor cleaning pull real output below that band, which is why we plan cleaning cycles.
Will you tell me how much money I will save?
Only after reading your bills. Savings depend on your tariff category, demand charges and how much output you consume during the day. We give the generation in units and the share consumed on site, then work out the rupee figure with you using your own bill rather than an assumed rate.

Licensee & approvals

Is my Ahmedabad factory on Torrent Power or UGVCL?
Check the licensee printed on your bill. Torrent Power distributes inside its Ahmedabad licence area, while UGVCL supplies most of the rest of the district, including Changodar and Sanand GIDC. UGVCL also runs Naroda sub-divisions, so never assume the licensee from the address.
How is Torrent Power net metering for industrial connections handled?
We file the rooftop application on your consumer number with the drawings and equipment list. Torrent Power checks feasibility, then inspects and meters the plant. Commercial terms for exported units come from GERC's order in force on your commissioning date, not from the licensee or from us.
Can I install a plant larger than my sanctioned load?
Generally no. Rooftop capacity is tied to your sanctioned load or contract demand under the GERC framework, and the licensee checks this at feasibility. If your planned plant is larger, the first step is a load enhancement application, which we can prepare alongside the solar file.

Roof & engineering

Can solar go on an old asbestos or tin shed?
Sometimes. We inspect the sheeting, fixings and purlins first. Weak or brittle sheeting may need replacement or a raised structure that bears on the steel frame instead. If the roof cannot carry the plant safely, we say so and suggest repair first rather than forcing an installation.
How much roof area does a factory plant need?
It depends on tilt, row spacing, walkways and shade, so there is no fixed ratio we would stand behind. Vents, skylights, parapets and roof monitors all cut usable area. The survey measures clear roof section by section and turns that into a plant size, which is the only figure worth planning around.
Will installation stop my production?
Rarely. Roof work happens above the floor and is scheduled around shifts. The only interruption is a short, planned shutdown when we connect to the main panel. We agree that window with your maintenance team in advance, usually on a weekly off day.

Finance & tax

Can my factory claim accelerated depreciation?
Yes, if the business pays income tax and owns the plant. Solar power generating systems qualify for 40% depreciation under Appendix I of the Income Tax Rules. The first-year claim depends on when the plant is put to use, so confirm the timing and your eligibility with your accountant before you commission.
What GST applies to a factory solar plant?
Since 22 September 2025, solar equipment carries 5% GST and the service share, treated as 30% of a supply-and-install contract, carries 18%. The blended rate is about 8.9%. A registered business may be able to claim input tax credit; your tax adviser should confirm it for your case.
