Rooftop solar for factories in Vatva GIDC.

Vatva GIDC is one of Gujarat's oldest industrial estates, and many of its sheds were built long before anyone thought about rooftop load. We survey the roof and the fumes around it first, design a plant that suits your process, and file the paperwork with Torrent Power. Modules come through an authorised channel partner of Adani; inverters are Qbits.

The short answer

A factory in Vatva GIDC can run a rooftop plant on its own shed. It can use the output against daytime units it now buys from Torrent Power, the licensee for the estate. Each kW yields 4 to 4.5 units a day, so 200 kW gives about 2.92 to 3.29 lakh units a year. The business claims 40% accelerated depreciation. Plants above 25 kW are priced after a load study.

The estate

An old, dense chemical and engineering estate on the south-east edge of the city

Vatva GIDC is a mature estate packed with small and mid-sized process units. For rooftop solar, its age and its chemistry matter more than its size, because both decide what the roof can carry and how long the structure lasts.

The Vatva Industries Association states that GIDC set the estate up in 1968 and that it covers about 527 hectares across four phases. The association also counts more than 2,500 industrial units, around 95% of them MSMEs. The association lists chemicals, dyes and dye intermediates, engineering, foundries, pharmaceuticals, plastics, rubber, food, ice and textiles among its trades. Public institutes such as CIPET and the Indo German Tool Room also sit in the estate. The association's own office is in Phase IV on the Mehmedabad highway road.

Three things follow for a solar plant. First, many sheds date from the estate's early decades, so sheeting, fixings and purlins need a proper look before any layout. Second, acid vapour, solvent fumes and dust from neighbouring process units attack steel and dull glass faster than a clean commercial roof would see. Third, plots are tightly packed, so a taller building next door can shade part of your roof in winter.

On the grid side, Vatva lies inside the Ahmedabad area where Torrent Power holds the distribution licence. UGVCL's list of Ahmedabad-area sub-divisions covers Naroda, Kathwada and the western belts but shows no Vatva office, and Torrent Power has run safety sessions for members at the estate. Your bill header settles it for your connection.

Dyes, intermediates and bulk chemicals

Reactors, agitators, centrifuges, dryers and scrubber fans usually run through the day shift and often round the clock. That base draw absorbs almost all of a rooftop plant's output on site. The catch is the air: we specify coatings and fasteners for a corrosive atmosphere and keep arrays clear of vents.

Engineering shops and foundries

Lathes, CNC centres, welding sets, induction furnaces and compressors make a lumpy load that rises with orders. Solar covers the steady daytime floor, not the furnace peaks. Foundry roofs also collect heavy dust and heat, so cleaning frequency and module temperature losses go into the yield estimate.

Pharma, plastics and rubber processing

Moulding machines, mixers, HVAC for controlled rooms and chilled water plants keep demand high from morning to late afternoon. Clean rooms add a constraint: roof penetrations near air handling units need care so the plant does not compromise the building envelope or filtration.

Effluent pumps and utilities

Every process unit in Vatva carries an effluent treatment and pumping load, plus cooling towers and water handling. These motors run during working hours regardless of order flow, which gives a dependable slice of daytime consumption for the plant to serve.

How the numbers work

Reading the numbers for a Vatva unit

The plant earns its keep through daytime units you no longer buy from Torrent Power. We estimate in units first, because your tariff category and contract demand are specific to your connection and we will not assume them.

In Ahmedabad's climate a clean, south-facing array yields 4 to 4.5 units per installed kW per day over a year. That works out to roughly 1,460 to 1,640 units per kW annually. A 50 kW plant on a small Vatva shed would therefore produce about 73,000 to 82,000 units a year, and a 200 kW plant about 2.92 to 3.29 lakh units. Fume deposits and dust push real output down unless the cleaning plan keeps up.

The value depends on when you consume. A dye house running three shifts uses nearly every unit the plant makes. An engineering job shop closed on Sundays and short on afternoon work exports more. Exported energy is credited under the GERC framework that applies to your connection on the date it is commissioned. We lay your hourly or monthly consumption over the expected generation, then check sanctioned load and contract demand, which cap what Torrent Power will connect. Expect the plant to cut energy units more than the demand charge.

On tax, solar power generating systems fall in the 40% accelerated depreciation block under Appendix I of the Income Tax Rules. This guide to accelerated depreciation covers how the first-year claim works. Since 22 September 2025, equipment attracts 5% GST and the service portion, taken as 30% of a supply-and-install contract, attracts 18%, about 8.9% overall. For scale, a 25 kW plant in Gujarat costs ₹10.75 lakh to ₹13.50 lakh, roughly ₹43,000 to ₹54,000 per kW. Larger plants are priced after the load study.

Engineering a plant for a Vatva shed

In an estate this old and this chemical, the building and the air around it set the limits. We settle three questions before quoting: can the roof take it, will the structure survive, and can the panel board accept it.

Roof survey and shade map

We note sheeting material and thickness, corrosion at laps and fixings, leaks, and the condition of purlins and trusses. Asbestos cement or badly rusted sheets may need replacement or a structure that bears on the steel frame instead. Neighbouring buildings, stacks and scrubber outlets are mapped for winter shade.

Corrosion, fire and wind

Where acid or solvent fumes are present we specify hot-dip galvanised or coated steel, or aluminium, with stainless fasteners, and hold arrays back from exhausts. Cable routes avoid solvent stores and hazardous areas. Wind uplift is checked against the frame, and walkways and lifelines are planned for twenty-five years of cleaning crews.

Panel board and protection

We take your existing single-line diagram, or draw one, and choose the inverter location and point of connection. Earthing, surge protection and isolation are designed to Torrent Power's technical requirements. If the plant size calls for electrical inspector approval, we prepare that file alongside the licensee application.

Torrent Power

Approvals: who does what.

For a Vatva connection the file goes to Torrent Power. We confirm the consumer number and connection type from your bill, then handle each stage in order.

1

Load study and design

We read twelve months of bills, the sanctioned load or contract demand and the connection category. Then we survey the roof and fix the plant size, layout and single-line diagram that the application will carry.

Us
2

Rooftop application

We submit the application on your consumer number with drawings and equipment details. Torrent Power checks technical feasibility against your load and the local network, and may ask for clarifications before approving.

Us, then Torrent Power
3

Installation and inspection

Work starts only after approval. Once the plant is built, our engineer attends the inspection to explain earthing, protection settings and isolation, and any electrical inspector clearance is secured before the meter is changed.

Us
4

Meter and synchronisation

Torrent Power installs or seals the bidirectional meter and permits synchronisation. From then, imports and exports are billed under the GERC terms that apply to your connection. We pass you the commissioning documents.

Torrent Power
Paying for it

Three ways to fund the plant.

Most Vatva units pay for solar from reserves or through their existing bank. The right route depends on your tax position and credit lines, which your accountant knows better than we do.

Cash from reserves

Paying outright keeps the asset on your books and the 40% depreciation claim in your hands. The first-year deduction depends on the date the plant is put to use, so plan commissioning with your chartered accountant against the financial year rather than leaving it to chance.

Bank or MSME loan

Banks treat a rooftop plant as plant and machinery, and many Vatva MSMEs fold it into an existing term loan or credit facility. Borrowing does not affect the depreciation claim. We provide the proposal, bill of materials and unit generation estimate that a credit officer asks for.

Phase the plant

If one bay of the shed is sound and another needs repair, build on the good section now and extend later. We size the inverter room, cabling and earthing for the full plant so the second stage connects cleanly. Each extension needs its own application to Torrent Power.

From enquiry to export

How the project runs.

A Vatva project moves through five stages. The licensee step is the one we cannot time exactly, so we report on it weekly.

Where we work from

Heaven Green Energy is headquartered at Mota Varachha, Surat, and that is our only office. We have no branch in Ahmedabad. Vatva GIDC projects are handled by our engineering team travelling from Surat, with our channel partner network helping on surveys and site supervision. You will know who is responsible for your roof before you sign anything.

01

Bill review · Day 1 to 2

You share bills, plot and phase. We read the consumer number, sanctioned load and daytime usage, and tell you honestly whether a survey is worth your time.

02

Site survey · Week 1

Engineers inspect sheeting, purlins, fume sources, shade and the main panel. We photograph each roof bay and measure the clear area against your load pattern.

03

Design and offer · Week 2

You get the layout, single-line diagram, generation in units, structure and corrosion specification and a written bill of materials. The price comes with it, not before.

04

Approval and build · Depends on Torrent Power

We file with Torrent Power, wait for approval and then install, planning roof access around your shifts and any hot-work permits your safety officer requires.

05

Commissioning · After inspection

Torrent Power meters the plant. We commission it, hand over test records and monitoring access, and start the agreed cleaning and maintenance schedule.

Six things to check with any vendor.

  1. Vatva GIDC sits in Torrent Power's Ahmedabad licence area, so the rooftop file goes to Torrent Power; check your bill header to be sure.
  2. The estate dates from 1968, so older sheeting and purlins need inspection before a layout is drawn.
  3. Fumes from chemical and dye units call for corrosion-rated structures, stainless fasteners and arrays kept clear of vents.
  4. Each kW yields 4 to 4.5 units a day; a 200 kW plant makes about 2.92 to 3.29 lakh units a year.
  5. Size against steady daytime draw, within your sanctioned load or contract demand.
  6. Expect 40% accelerated depreciation and about 8.9% blended GST; plants above 25 kW are priced after a load study.
Questions

Industrial solar in Vatva GIDC, answered.

Cost & output

What does a rooftop plant cost for a Vatva factory?
We price anything above 25 kW only after a load study, because roof repairs, corrosion-grade structure and cable length vary sharply between Vatva sheds. As a reference point, a 25 kW plant in Gujarat falls between ₹10.75 lakh and ₹13.50 lakh. Ask any installer quoting larger plants blind how they priced the roof.
How many units will a 50 kW plant make in Vatva?
Roughly 73,000 to 82,000 units a year. That comes from 4 to 4.5 units per kW per day, the annual average for Ahmedabad on a clean, shadow-free roof. In a chemical estate, fume film and dust cut output quickly, so the cleaning schedule matters as much as the panel choice.
Can you tell me my rupee savings before a survey?
No. Savings depend on your Torrent Power tariff category, demand charges and how much of the output you use during working hours. We give you generation in units and the share consumed on site. You or your accountant can then apply the rates printed on your own bill.

Licensee & approvals

Is Vatva GIDC served by Torrent Power or UGVCL?
Torrent Power. Vatva lies within its Ahmedabad licence area, UGVCL's Ahmedabad-area sub-divisions list no Vatva office, and Torrent Power has held safety sessions for estate members. Still read the licensee name on your bill, because the application must go on the consumer number printed there.
How does Torrent Power net metering work for an industrial unit?
We apply on your consumer number with drawings and equipment details. Torrent Power checks feasibility, then inspects the plant and fits a bidirectional meter. The commercial treatment of exported units comes from the GERC order in force on your commissioning date, so we read that order with you rather than promising a fixed credit.
Do I need a separate approval for a large plant?
Possibly. Beyond Torrent Power's own approval, larger plants may need electrical inspector clearance before the meter is changed. Your sanctioned load or contract demand also limits the size Torrent Power will accept. If the plant you want exceeds it, a load enhancement request comes first, and we can prepare both together.

Roof & engineering

Will acid fumes damage the panels and structure?
They shorten the life of ordinary steel and fasteners, which is why we specify galvanised or coated steel or aluminium, stainless fixings and set-backs from vents and scrubbers. Module glass handles the air well if it is washed often. We record fume sources at survey and design around them.
My shed is old asbestos sheeting. Can it take solar?
Sometimes, but not by drilling into the sheets. We check the purlins and trusses and, where the sheeting is brittle, mount on a structure that bears on the steel frame or recommend re-roofing first. If the building cannot carry the plant safely, we tell you so in writing.
Will the work interrupt production or need hot-work permits?
Roof work runs above the shop floor around your shifts. Final connection to the main board needs a short planned shutdown, usually on your weekly off. If your safety system demands permits for cutting or welding on the roof, we follow your permit procedure and supervise on site.

Finance & tax

How does accelerated depreciation help a Vatva unit?
If your business owns the plant and pays income tax, it can claim depreciation at 40% under Appendix I of the Income Tax Rules. The first-year amount depends on when the plant is put to use. Your chartered accountant should confirm eligibility and timing for your books before commissioning.
What GST rate applies to a factory plant?
Since 22 September 2025, solar equipment carries 5% GST and the service share, treated as 30% of a supply-and-install contract, carries 18%. Together that is about 8.9%. Registered businesses may be able to claim input tax credit, which your tax adviser should confirm.
