The short answer

Factories in Naroda GIDC can mount solar on their own shed roofs and use the output during the working day. Each kilowatt yields 4 to 4.5 units daily, so 100 kW gives roughly 1.46 to 1.64 lakh units a year. Your licensee may be Torrent Power or UGVCL, and your bill header settles which. Factories get no PM Surya Ghar subsidy; 40% accelerated depreciation applies instead.

The estate

Naroda GIDC: an older estate on Ahmedabad's eastern edge

Naroda sits on the north-eastern side of Ahmedabad, where the Sardar Patel Ring Road passes the town. Its GIDC estate is one of the older industrial areas around the city, and that age shows up on the roofs.

Wikipedia records that Naroda became part of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation in 1996, and that the Sardar Patel Ring Road runs past it, about 8 km from the city airport. The same article describes engineering, pump, textile, pharmaceutical and food units in the industrial area. We do not repeat the company names it lists, and we do not claim any firm in the estate as a client.

The electricity question is less tidy than the map. Torrent Power holds the distribution licence for Ahmedabad city, and Naroda is inside the municipal corporation. Yet UGVCL's 2019 list of sub-divisions shows two offices called Naroda and Naroda Urban, plus one for Kathwada industrial area, all under its Sabarmati circle. The licence boundary and the municipal boundary are not the same line, so we could not confirm from a primary source which licensee supplies every plot in the estate.

The practical answer is your bill. The company name and logo printed at the top tell you who holds your connection. That decides where the rooftop application goes, which formats it uses and who inspects the plant. We check it before we draw anything.

Pumps, motors and engineering shops

Machining, fabrication and pump assembly run lathes, welding sets, test benches and compressed air through the day shift. That draw is steady and sits under the solar curve. We log motor starting currents and power factor at survey, because a monthly unit total hides what the switchgear actually sees.

Chemical and pharmaceutical process loads

Reactors, agitators, dryers, vacuum pumps and effluent treatment often run long hours, some through the night. Solar covers the daylight share only. We size against the daytime portion of your load profile, so the plant is not built to a figure the night shift will never use.

Textile and processing machines

Weaving, winding and finishing machines draw near-constant power while the shift runs. Where a unit works one or two shifts in daylight, most generation is used on site as it is produced. That keeps export low and makes banking terms matter less to the result.

Food processing, chilling and cold storage

Chillers, freezers and cold rooms work hardest on hot afternoons from March to June. That is when a Naroda roof produces the most units. The match is good even where the roof only fits a modest plant, because the cooling load is already there when the sun is strongest.

How the numbers work

Factory solar in units, not rupee promises

We size a factory plant on the units you consume in daylight. We will not print a saving or a payback here, because both depend on your tariff category, demand charges and how much output you use on site.

Daylight units decide the plant. A shadow-free Naroda roof yields 4 to 4.5 units per kilowatt per day over a year. That puts a 100 kW plant at about 1.46 to 1.64 lakh units annually and a 250 kW plant at about 3.65 to 4.1 lakh. Compare those figures with what your meter records between morning start-up and the evening shift change. The overlap is the share you consume directly.

Your connection sets a ceiling. The licensee approves rooftop capacity against your sanctioned load or contract demand, so filling the whole roof is not automatic. Solar also lowers units more reliably than recorded maximum demand: a cloudy half hour with every machine running still pulls full power from the grid. Twelve months of bills show us both patterns before we fix a size.

Tax replaces the subsidy. PM Surya Ghar covers residential consumers, not factories. A business claims 40% accelerated depreciation on solar power generating systems under Appendix I of the Income Tax Rules. GST has been 5% on solar equipment since 22 Sep 2025, with 18% on the service share, taken as 30% of a supply-and-install contract. The blended rate is about 8.9%. For reference, the indicative Gujarat market band at 25 kW is ₹10.75 lakh to ₹13.50 lakh, roughly ₹43,000 to ₹54,000 per kW. Anything larger is priced after a load study, since structure, cable runs and metering shift the cost per kW from site to site.

Engineering for older Naroda sheds

An older estate means older roofs, so the structure is checked before the module count. Three things come first: what the roof can carry, how the array stays safe, and how it connects to your panel.

Sheeting age, purlins and added load

Many sheds in long-running estates carry sheeting that has been patched or replaced in parts. We check sheet profile, corrosion, purlin size and spacing, then calculate the added dead load. If a bay is weak, you get a strengthening proposal or a lighter mounting layout before signing, not after material reaches the gate.

Wind, water and fire clearances

Rails fix into purlins rather than the sheet alone, and every penetration is sealed for the monsoon. We keep walkways for cleaning, leave clear space around vents, skylights and any roof-mounted exhaust, and bond the structure to earth. Chemical units with roof vents get extra clearance in the layout.

Inverters, protection and licensee interface

Qbits inverters go near your main LT panel to keep AC cables short. The design carries DC and AC isolation, surge protection, earthing pits and the meter arrangement your licensee asks for. On an HT connection the plant ties in on the LT side of your transformer, documented for inspection.

Torrent Power or UGVCL

Approvals: who does what.

Nothing is connected until your licensee approves it. Because Naroda units may sit with Torrent Power or UGVCL, we confirm which one first and prepare that licensee's file.

1

Bill check, survey and diagram

We read the licensee name and consumer number from your bill and review twelve months of consumption and demand. We then survey the roof and prepare the plant layout and single-line diagram for submission.

Us
2

Rooftop application

We file the application with plant rating, diagram and equipment datasheets in the format your licensee uses. It checks capacity against your sanctioned load and the local network, then approves or asks for changes.

3

Build and safety clearance

We install to the approved drawings and compile test results, earthing values and protection settings. Where your plant size needs Electrical Inspectorate clearance, we prepare that file and follow it through.

Inspection, metering and switch-on

The licensee inspects the plant and fits or certifies the meters. Once energised, generation starts showing on your bill. Our engineer attends the inspection so that any query is closed on the spot.

Torrent Power or UGVCL
Paying for it

Three ways to fund the plant.

Three routes to pay for a plant. The right one depends on your tax position, cash flow and how your firm treats capital assets.

Buy it outright

The firm owns the plant, books it as an asset and claims 40% accelerated depreciation in the year it is first used. This suits a profitable taxpayer with spare capital. You keep every unit generated, and an AMC with us covers cleaning schedules, inspections and inverter checks.

Term loan or equipment finance

Banks and NBFCs fund MSME solar plants, and ownership stays with you for depreciation. We provide the quotation, bill of materials and generation estimate that lenders request. The lender sets the interest rate and tenure, so compare total cost across offers, not the monthly instalment alone.

RESCO or pay-per-unit

A developer owns the plant on your roof and bills you for units delivered. No capital goes out, but you give up the depreciation claim. Check tenure, buy-out price, roof access and what happens if you sell or vacate the shed before you sign.

From enquiry to export

How the project runs.

Five stages from your first call to a working plant. Durations are typical and depend on licensee queues.

Six things to check with any vendor.

  1. Read the licensee name on your bill first: Naroda units may be on Torrent Power or UGVCL.
  2. Each kW on a clear Naroda roof yields 4 to 4.5 units a day across the year.
  3. Older sheds need a purlin and sheeting check before any panel layout is drawn.
  4. Factories get no PM Surya Ghar subsidy; 40% accelerated depreciation applies instead.
  5. GST on a supply-and-install contract blends to about 8.9% since 22 Sep 2025.
  6. Plants above 25 kW are priced only after a site visit and load study.
Questions

Industrial solar in Naroda GIDC, answered.

Cost & output

How many units will a solar plant make on my Naroda factory roof?
Expect 4 to 4.5 units per kilowatt per day, averaged over a year, on a shadow-free roof. A 100 kW plant makes about 1.46 to 1.64 lakh units annually. Monsoon months run lower and summer months higher. Dust from nearby process units can cut output, so cleaning frequency matters here.
What does a factory plant cost in Naroda GIDC?
At 25 kW the indicative Gujarat market band is ₹10.75 lakh to ₹13.50 lakh, about ₹43,000 to ₹54,000 per kW. Larger plants are priced only after a load study, because roof strengthening, cable distance to your panel and metering change the cost per kW considerably between sheds.
Why will you not quote a payback period for my plant?
Payback for a factory depends on your tariff category, demand charges, how much output you use on site and your tax position. None of those can be known from a web page. After the load study we show expected units and you can apply your own tariff to them.

Licensee & approvals

Is Naroda GIDC served by Torrent Power or UGVCL?
We could not settle this from a primary source for every plot. Torrent Power holds the Ahmedabad city licence, and Naroda is inside the municipal corporation. UGVCL also lists Naroda and Naroda Urban sub-divisions. The company name at the top of your bill is the reliable answer.
Does it matter which licensee I am with?
Yes. The licensee decides the application format, the documents it wants, who inspects the plant and how exported units are treated on your bill. Filing with the wrong one means the papers come back and weeks are lost. We confirm your licensee before preparing any drawing.
Who sets the net metering and banking rules for factories?
The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission frames rooftop and banking arrangements for both Torrent Power and UGVCL, within the Gujarat solar policy. Terms differ by plant size and consumer category and are revised over time, so we check the current order against your connection during the load study.

Roof & engineering

Can an old shed roof in Naroda carry solar panels?
Often it can, but only after a check. We inspect sheeting condition, corrosion, purlin size and spacing, and calculate the added load. Where the structure is light, we propose strengthening or a lighter mounting system. If the roof cannot take it safely, we say so.
Will drilling into the roof cause leaks in the monsoon?
Not when the fixing is done properly. Rails are anchored into purlins, and each penetration gets a sealing washer and sealant suited to metal sheeting. We avoid fixing through damaged sheets and replace them first if needed. Leak checks are part of the handover.
My unit has an HT connection. How does solar connect?
The plant connects on the low-tension side behind your transformer, into your main LT panel. We design isolation, protection and metering for that arrangement and document it for the licensee. Your HT metering stays in place; the plant reduces what the factory draws through it.

Finance & tax

Can my factory claim the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
No. PM Surya Ghar is for residential consumers. A business instead claims 40% accelerated depreciation on solar power generating systems under Appendix I of the Income Tax Rules. That reduces taxable profit in the year the plant is first used. Ask your accountant how it fits your books.
What GST applies to a factory solar contract?
Since 22 Sep 2025, solar equipment carries 5% GST and the service portion 18%. For a supply-and-install contract the service share is taken as 30%, so the blended rate comes to about 8.9%. A GST-registered business may be able to claim input credit, depending on use.
