The short answer

An Ahmedabad shop, office, hospital, school, hotel or mall can install rooftop solar on its own connection and cut the daytime units it buys. Torrent Power supplies businesses inside its Ahmedabad licence area and UGVCL supplies the rest, so the bill header decides where the file goes. Each kW yields 4 to 4.5 units a day. PM Surya Ghar does not cover businesses; taxpaying firms claim 40% accelerated depreciation.

Commercial buildings

Which Ahmedabad businesses get the most from a roof plant

The best commercial candidates use most of their electricity between nine and five. Ahmedabad summers push air conditioning hard through those hours, so offices, showrooms and clinics line up with the solar curve better than most.

Commercial buildings in Ahmedabad fall into two electrical patterns. Some, like offices, showrooms, schools and day clinics, draw heavily in daylight and fall quiet after dark. Others, like hospitals, hotels and malls, run late or all night. The first group consumes nearly every solar unit on site. The second relies more on exported units being credited against evening use.

Your licensee depends on where the meter sits, not on the city name in your letterhead. Torrent Power holds the distribution licence for Ahmedabad city. Areas beyond that licence, including much of the western and eastern fringe, are supplied by UGVCL. A UGVCL list of sub-divisions names offices at Bopal, Shela, Shilaj, Changodar, Naroda, Kathwada and Sanand, which tells you how far its network reaches into places many people call Ahmedabad.

Telling the two apart takes one minute. Look at the top of your electricity bill. It carries the licensee's name and logo and your consumer or service number. Municipal boundaries have changed over the years and supply areas did not always move with them, so a ward name proves nothing. Send us the bill and we confirm the licensee before quoting.

Shops, showrooms and offices

Split or ducted air conditioners, display lighting, lifts and computers run from opening time to early evening. That profile matches solar output closely. A showroom on CG Road or an office floor in a commercial tower often uses most of its plant's output directly, with little left over to export.

Hospitals and clinics

Operation theatres, ICUs, chillers, sterilisers and laundry keep a hospital loaded day and night. Solar covers part of the daytime base load. It does not replace the diesel generator or UPS, because a grid-tied plant switches off in an outage. Critical circuits keep their existing backup arrangement unchanged.

Schools and colleges

Classrooms, labs, fans and computer rooms run in morning and afternoon sessions, which suits solar well. The weak point is the summer vacation, when the campus is empty during peak generation. Sizing has to account for those idle weeks, because surplus units are settled under the licensee's rules rather than paid out freely.

Hotels, malls and commercial complexes

Central air conditioning, escalators, kitchens, laundries and common lighting run for long hours. In a multi-tenant complex, each shop usually has its own meter while the association or developer holds the common connection. The plant connects to one connection, so decide early whose bill it is meant to reduce.

How the numbers work

Judge the plant in units first, then let your accountant price them

A commercial plant earns its keep by replacing units you would otherwise buy. We size it from twelve months of bills, then hand you a unit forecast your accountant converts using the tariff printed on your bill.

Start from units. In Ahmedabad each installed kilowatt produces 4 to 4.5 units a day on an unshaded roof. A 25 kW plant yields about 36,500 to 41,000 units a year, and a 100 kW plant about 1.46 to 1.64 lakh units. Set that against the units on your last twelve bills and you see what share of your load the roof can carry. We do not print a rupee saving here, because commercial tariffs vary by category and connection type.

Daytime match and contract demand. Units you consume as they are generated are worth the most, because they never touch the meter. A showroom that runs its chillers at noon uses nearly all of them. The licensee also checks the plant rating against your sanctioned load or contract demand. A business with a small connection and a large bill may therefore need a load revision first. Plants up to 25 kW sit in a market band of ₹10.75 lakh to ₹13.50 lakh; anything larger is priced after a load study.

Tax and GST. A taxpaying business can claim 40% accelerated depreciation on solar power generating systems under Appendix I of the Income Tax Rules. GST on a supply-and-install contract is 5% on equipment and 18% on the 30% service share, about 8.9% blended, since 22 Sep 2025. Whether you can claim input credit depends on your registration and use, so ask your chartered accountant.

Roof, structure and wiring checks for commercial buildings

Commercial roofs in Ahmedabad are rarely empty. Chillers, cooling towers, water tanks, signage and telecom masts take space and throw shade, so the survey measures what is actually usable before any layout.

Usable roof area and shade

We map rooftop plant, tanks, lift rooms, hoardings and neighbouring towers, then trace shadows through summer and winter. Hotels and malls often have large flat roofs crowded with HVAC equipment. Where floor space is short, an elevated structure can carry modules above walkways while leaving service access to chillers and cooling towers open.

Structure, wind and fire safety

Loading is checked against the slab or shed the plant sits on. Older showroom buildings and school blocks sometimes need a structural opinion before a heavy array goes up. We design anchoring for wind at the building's height, keep fire exits, refuge areas and terrace doors clear, and avoid cutting waterproofing wherever possible.

Electrical integration and approvals

Cabling runs from roof to the LT panel or meter room, sized for distance and current. We fit DC and AC isolation, surge protection and earthing the licensee inspects. In a hospital, the plant connects on the grid side, away from critical circuits fed by generators or UPS. The single-line diagram goes with the application.

Approvals: who does what.

Approval runs through whichever licensee bills you, Torrent Power or UGVCL. We prepare the technical file, and your business signs as the consumer on record for that connection.

1

Confirm licensee and collect papers

We read the bill to confirm the licensee and consumer number. We then gather ownership or lease proof, the authorised signatory's letter and, for a complex, the association's consent for using the roof.

2

Application and feasibility

The file carries the plant rating, single-line diagram and equipment datasheets. The licensee checks it against sanctioned load or contract demand and the local network before approving, or asks for a load change.

3

Installation and inspection

Installation starts only after approval. Licensee engineers then inspect earthing, isolation, protection settings and the metering point before they allow the plant to run parallel with the grid.

4

Meter change and commissioning

The licensee installs the bidirectional or solar meter and records commissioning. Credit for exported units begins from that recorded date, so delays at this step cost real generation.

Paying for it

Three ways to fund the plant.

Commercial owners usually pay in one of three ways. The right one depends on cash flow, tax position and whether you own or lease the building.

Outright purchase

Buying the plant puts the asset on your books, which is what lets you claim 40% accelerated depreciation. It suits profitable firms that own their premises. You pay in stages tied to milestones such as material delivery and commissioning, and you keep every unit the plant generates for its working life.

Business loan with EMI

Banks and NBFCs lend for commercial rooftop plants against your financials. We introduce our finance partner and supply the quotation, layout and Bill of Materials a lender asks for. Compare the monthly instalment with the units the plant removes from your bill before you commit, and check prepayment terms carefully.

OPEX or third-party ownership

A developer owns the plant on your roof and sells you the power under a long contract. You spend nothing upfront, but you do not claim depreciation, and the contract binds the roof for years. It works for hospitals and schools that prefer to keep capital for core spending.

Where we work from

Heaven Green Energy has one office, at Mota Varachha in Surat; we have no branch in Ahmedabad. We serve commercial sites in Ahmedabad and across Central Gujarat through our channel partner network and field engineering team. They carry out surveys, supervise installation and deal with Torrent Power or UGVCL on the ground. We tell you this before you sign.

01

Bill and load review · Day 1 to 2

We read twelve months of bills, confirm Torrent Power or UGVCL, note sanctioned load and look at when your building actually draws power through the day.

02

Roof survey · Day 2 to 5

An engineer measures usable area, checks shade from equipment and neighbouring buildings, inspects the slab or shed and traces the cable route to your LT panel.

03

Proposal and BOM · Within a week

You receive a layout, plant size, unit forecast, itemised Bill of Materials and price. For plants above 25 kW, the price reflects the load study, not a list rate.

04

Approval and installation · After feasibility

We file with your licensee and install once approved. Work is scheduled around trading hours, patient areas or school timetables to keep disruption low.

05

Inspection and handover · Set by the licensee

The licensee inspects and changes the meter. We hand over monitoring access, warranty documents and the maintenance plan, and start the AMC visits.

Six things to check with any vendor.

  1. Offices, showrooms, clinics and schools use power in daylight, so most of their solar units are consumed on site.
  2. Torrent Power supplies its Ahmedabad licence area and UGVCL the rest; the licensee printed on your bill is the one you apply to.
  3. Each kW in Ahmedabad produces 4 to 4.5 units a day, so a 100 kW plant gives about 1.46 to 1.64 lakh units a year.
  4. PM Surya Ghar covers homes only; a taxpaying business claims 40% accelerated depreciation instead.
  5. Plants up to 25 kW sit in a ₹10.75 lakh to ₹13.50 lakh band; bigger commercial plants are priced after a load study.
  6. Hospitals keep their generator and UPS, because a grid-tied plant stops during an outage.
Questions

Commercial solar in Ahmedabad, answered.

Cost & output

What does a commercial solar plant cost in Ahmedabad?
A 25 kW plant falls in a market band of ₹10.75 lakh to ₹13.50 lakh, roughly ₹43,000 to ₹54,000 per kW at that size. Larger commercial plants are priced after a load study, because roof type, structure height and cable distance change the cost more than the module count does.
How many units will a plant on my building produce?
Each kW produces 4 to 4.5 units a day on an unshaded Ahmedabad roof, averaged over the year. A 50 kW plant gives about 73,000 to 82,000 units a year, and a 100 kW plant about 1.46 to 1.64 lakh. Output dips in the monsoon and peaks from March to May.
How large a plant should my business install?
Size it to the units you use in daylight, capped by your sanctioned load or contract demand and your usable roof. We read a full year of bills, because a school's vacation months or a hotel's off-season change the answer. An oversized plant exports more and earns less per unit.

Licensee & approvals

How do I know if Torrent Power or UGVCL supplies my business?
Look at the top of your electricity bill. It shows the licensee's name, logo and your consumer number. Torrent Power covers its Ahmedabad licence area; UGVCL runs sub-divisions at places such as Bopal, Shela, Changodar and Kathwada. Ward names and pin codes are not reliable guides, so trust the bill.
Can a shop in a mall or complex install its own plant?
Only if it has roof rights. The roof of a mall or commercial complex usually belongs to the association or developer, who must consent in writing. Often the better route is a plant on the common connection that runs lifts, escalators and corridor lighting, filed in the association's name.
Who sets the net-metering rules for commercial consumers?
The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission sets the framework, and Torrent Power or UGVCL applies it to your connection. Settlement of surplus units depends on your consumer category and the regulations in force. We confirm the treatment for your connection with the licensee during feasibility, before you sign.

Roof & engineering

Our roof is crowded with chillers and tanks. Can we still go solar?
Usually, yes. We map every piece of rooftop equipment and its shadow, then fit modules in the clear zones or on an elevated structure above walkways. Service access to chillers and cooling towers stays open. The survey tells you the realistic capacity before any proposal.
Will solar keep a hospital running during a power cut?
No. A grid-tied plant stops when the grid fails, so line workers are not put at risk. It reduces the daytime units the hospital buys. Theatres, ICUs and lifts stay on the existing generator and UPS, and we connect the plant away from those critical circuits.
Is a tin shed roof on a showroom or warehouse suitable?
Often, if the purlins and sheets are sound. We check sheet condition, purlin spacing and the structure's capacity before choosing clamps or a mounting rail system. Rusted or brittle sheets should be replaced first, because removing an array later to fix the roof costs more.

Finance & tax

Can my business claim accelerated depreciation on solar?
Yes, if the business owns the plant and pays income tax. Solar power generating systems qualify for 40% accelerated depreciation under Appendix I of the Income Tax Rules. Under an OPEX contract, the developer owns the asset and claims it instead. Confirm the timing with your chartered accountant.
What GST applies to a commercial solar installation?
Since 22 Sep 2025, solar equipment carries 5% GST and the 30% service share of a supply-and-install contract carries 18%, about 8.9% blended. Whether your business can recover any of it as input credit depends on your GST registration and use, so ask your accountant.
